Our Origins

Teliani Valley PLC was established in 1997 on the base of the “Teliani Winery of Vintage Wines” built in Tsinandali near the Teliani vineyards in 1954.
Tsinandali, due to peculiarities of its soil and microclimate, has always been the center of Georgian viniculture.
Here in 1886-1887, at the place of the old wine cellar and winery of Prince Alexander Chavchavadze, the first Georgian two-storey winery was built by decree of the Russian Emperor’s brother Michael Romanov.
In 1891 there was invited French Massano from Bordeaux who introduced the European practice of winemaking from the local vines. He also brought with him French vine variety “Cabernet Sauvignon”. The best place for growing this unique grape he chose Teliani valley due to perfect weather and soil conditions of the micro-zone.
In 1954 next to the Teliani vineyards there was built the special winery for production of red vintage wines. Cabernet Sauvignon cultivated on the Teliani valley was produced in this winery as elite red wine “Teliani”, intended for high-rank officials of the country.
In Soviet times the Teliani winery was known for its oak barrels and butts as they guaranteed the unique effect in aging premium dry vintage wines. This winery’s products were: Teliani, Mukuzani, Napareuali, Kvareli and Saperavi.

Company Today

Teliani Valley PLC is a successor of traditional Georgian wine production using the modern technologies and the knowledge of motivated young professionals.
On May 2004, Teliani Valley established strategic relationship with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). It acquired a block of shares of Teliani Valley PLC. This investment enabled the company to build a new winery, plant new vineyards in the best micro-zones of Georgia, improve marketing initiatives and increase sales of its premium quality wines, partially update existing production machinery and expand production capacity.
For a comparatively short time, the company replaced the obsolete production line by the modern western analogs and installed the up to date Italian grape processing equipment. To improve the quality of wine, modern pneumatic presses and stemmers were installed. A strict quality control system was introduced at all stages of the production process, from grape selection to bottling the end product.
On February 23, 2005, the Georgian Chamber of Commerce and Industry named Teliani Valley PLC the last year’s best medium size enterprise. The award was presented to the management of the company by the Prime Minister of Georgia, Mr. Zurab Nogaideli.
In September, 2005 a new winery was opened in Telavi, Kakheti region, which is equipped with a modern laboratory. Near the winery there is a small guest house which will host all visitors interested in Georgian viticulture and wine-making.
In May, 2005 Teliani Valley opened the first School of Sommeliers in Georgia the purpose of which is to introduce the European culture of wine consumption in our country.
In November 2005 there was established a holding company Teliani Group, the members of which are Teliani Group –management company, Teliani Valley –wine-producing company, Teliani Trading –distribution company, M-group - hotel and restaurant management company, Via-Travel - travel agency.
Nowadays this is the biggest holding company of this type in Georgia.

Winery And Vineyards

The first step in winemaking is to sort grapes by quality and variety categories.
In the winery destalking, crushing, fermentation and pressing are provided by modern equipment of the СМА, VELO and Della Toffola firms, which make wines more delicate and allow them to preserve better the taste qualities and variety flavors. The wine is bottled on a completely automated line manufactured by renowned Italian firm GAI, using the method of cold sterile bottling with PALL membrane filters.
To ensure the wine stability after preliminary filtration, wine is instantly cooled down to -4єC/-5є C, it is filtered with a kieselguhr filter preventing tartar deposition in the bottle and allowing the wine to preserve its flavor and best properties.
The premises for all stages of technological chain in this new plant are located appropriately: the zone for receiving grapes with crushes and pneumatic presses, fermenting vats of stainless steel supplied with special jackets for circulation of cold water, the cellar where the wine is matured in tanks and Bordeaux oak casks, the shop for bottling and the warehouse for ready production, the laboratory with the best, modern equipment is also of no small importance, that allows to test the quality of production at all stages of wine production.
For fermentation process of semi-sweet wines refrigerating equipment is used.
The company intends to place pitchers (“kvevri”) to produce wine in the traditional way the “Kakhetians” follow.
Teliani Valley’s vineyards are located in almost all main winemaking micro-regions of Georgia to provide the production of appellation controlled wines.
Teliani Valley’s winery is situated in Telavi, Kakheti region, which is known as the basic viniculture and winemaking area of Georgia.
Moderately humid climate, along with the temperately cold winter and hot summer, is characteristic to Kakheti region. Heat summation amounts to 3100 – 4000C. There appears to be brown, grey and meadow-brown soils as well as chernozems (black-earth) and alluvial zones.
Ideal soil for vineyards and mild climate is the best mix for producing high quality Georgian wines.
There are five sorts of vines that have the leading industrial value in Tsinandali, they are: “Rkatsiteli”, “Saperavi”, “Mtsvane”, “Khikhvi” and “Cabernet-Sauvignon”.
To make world famous good Georgian wine it is necessary to focus on quality, apply all the best and never forget the customers’ needs and the traditions of the country. The loyalty of our customers to our products is determined by our commitment to the main principle – infinite love to the Georgian wine phenomenon, which we shall never betray or give up.

Georgian Wine Overview

Georgia is rightly believed to be the motherland of wine-making. A joint expedition of the Simon Janashia State Museum of History and Tbilisi State University discovered in 1965 an ancient settlement in the bottom layer of the Shulaveri Hill and its ruins where a large quantity of botanic materials was found.
Among the findings, grape stones deserved special attention. Based on analyses, morphological and ampleometric data, Georgian and foreign scientists identified 10 grape stones as Vitis vinifera sativa D.C., the grape stones of cultivated variety. These stones date back to the 5.000-7,000 BC, as carbon-dating established, and are the oldest ones not only in Georgia but also in the whole world.
As Hugh Johnson writes in his book:«vinifera –a specific name which mans « fruit of grape». Botanists distinguished two varieties of Vitis vinifera – the wild variety, was called silvestris, and the other – sativa, which means cultivated. The ancient grape stones found in the Shulaveri cultivated layer in Georgia were identified as Vitis vinifera sativa».
Although «grape stones were also found during archeological excavations in Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, the age and perfection of varieties of the Georgian factual material are the most weighty argument in favor of the fact that the process of vine cultivation and making the drink of gods in Georgia, a country situated to the south of the Caucasian Mountains, was completed 7,000 years ago BC, or maybe earlier», -Hugh Johnson notes.
It would be appropriate here to cite US Professor Mark Govern who wrote in the catalogue of the Georgian National Treasury exhibition (1999.): «Georgia is the motherland of winemaking, based on the data of late Stone Age, Neolith, the introduction of wine culture in the mankind’s cultural and economic life originated in Georgia. The stones of the ancient cultivated grape found in Shulaveri and dated 7,000-6,00o BC evidence that the high winemaking culture already existed at that time along the gorge of the Mtkavari river and in Southern and Central Georgia».
According to a legend, when the St Nino, who baptized Georgians, came to Georgia from Kalladokkia, she carried in her hands a cross made of a vine bound by her own hair. Since that time, vine has been a symbol of the new religion. St. Nino Convent where she was buried is still operating. Vine is always mentioned in Georgian tales, legends, songs.
In the 9th century, the academy Ikalto including a winemaking department was established in Georgia. This academy is famous for the fact that poet Shota Rustavely studied there in the 12th century.
For many centuries winegrowing was the basis of agriculture in Georgia. The stock of indigenous varieties includes over five hundred names. The methods of grape formation were diverse – olikhnari, khardani, kheivani, talaveri etc. The peak of the Georgian winegrowing was in the second half of the 19th century. A great contribution to the development of the Georgian winemaking was made by prince and poet Alexander Chavchavadze who owned the Tsinandali estate. It was there where the making of wines of local varieties (Rkatsiteli, Mstvane.Saperavi) began. Incidentally, great Georgian painter Niko Pirosmanishvili drew labels for some Georgian wines.
Most of the currently popular Georgian wines appeared in the 20th century: Khvanchkara – in 1907, Ojaleshi – in 1933, Kindzmarauli – in 1942, Usakhelouri – in 1943, Akhasheni – in 1958, Alazani Valley – in 1977. Today, over 27 grape varieties are cultivatyed in Georgia. The main of them are – Aladasturi, Alexandrouli, Goruli, Mtsvane, Krakhuna, Mudzhureutli, Kakhuri, Mtsvane, Ostkhanuri, Sapere, Ojaleshi, Rachuli, Tetra, Rkatsiteli, Tsitska, Tsolikouri, Chinuri, Saperavi, Usakhelouri, Khikhi, Chkhaveri, Shavkalito.

Wine Growing Regions

the Black Sea Coast zone

Subzones: Guria ; Ajara ; Samegrelo ; Abkhazia ;
Black Sea Coast area represents viticulture and winemaking zone of Georgia. It unites west Georgian regions located at an elevation from 0 to 400-500m above the sea level.
Well-known native sorts of wine are produced in Adjara, Guria, Samegrelo and Abkhazia. Since old days, viticulture had been widely developed in this region till the 19-th century.
Humid subtropical area includes two viticulture and winemaking subareas: Achara-Gurian and Samegrelo-Abkhazian zones. Achara-Gurian subarea covers plain (up to 75-125m above the sea level) and foothills of Achara and Guria (at the elevation from 75-125m to 400-500m above the sea level) that were formed by the slopes of Meskheti ridge. Annual average temperature in this subarea reaches 13,5-14C. And the volume of precipitation makes up 2300 – 2500mm. Red-soil and podzol earth predominate in the given region. To the east, mountain grey-soil is substituted by zheltozems (yellowish soil).
Main grape varieties cover “Tsolikouri”, “Chkhaveri”, “Aladasturi”, “Aligote”, etc. “Tsolikouri” is utilized for production of ordinary table wines and “Chkhaveri” is used for manufacturing of natural semisweet vintage wine “Chkhaveri”.
Samegrelo-Abkhazian subarea is the extension of Achara-Gurian subzone. It is extended up to 400-450m above the sea level. It is narrowed to the north (Abkhazia) and broadened to the southeast (Samegrelo). Summer is hot. Intermediate temperature of the hottest month reaches 23C. Volume of precipitation totals 1300 – 1450mm. This area is characterized by red-and-brown soil, but humus-carbonate soil prevails in mountain-wood zones.
Such varieties as “Tsolikouri”, “Chkhaveri”, “Ojaleshi” as well as domestic ones, like “Avasirkhva”, “Kachichi” and “Tskhenisdzudzu Abkhazuri” are spread around Abkhazia.

Imereti

Imereti occupies the eastern territories of West Georgia including riverbasins of Rioni, Kvirila and other rivers. Climate of the region is moderately humid. Precipitation is sufficient for vine growing. Like Kakheti, Imereti uses traditional methods of winemaking; the main difference being thai 4-5% of husks are added to the juice during fermentation, similar to the method used to produce Italian Governo. The stabilization process then lasts for six to eight weeks. Grape varieties traditionally cultivated in Imereti include Tsolikouri, Tsitska, Krakhuna - for white table wines; Dzelshavi, Shavkapito, Aladasturi, Otskhanuri Sapere, Saperavi - for red wines. Tsitska, Goruli Mtsvane, also black Pint, Aligote and Chardonnay - for sparkling wines. Samegrelo The Ojaleshi grape variety is harvested in the highlands of Samegrelo and in Salkhino-Tamakoni micro-regions. The table wine "Ojaleshi", which lias an intensive colour and naturally semi-sweet taste, is produced from this variety.

Kakheti

Kakheti is the major winemaking region in Georgia. 70% of all grapes and wine comes from this region. It is located in the South-eastern part of the country, on the lowlands of Alazani and Iori, on the slopes of Caucasus and Gombori mountains. The climate here is mild and best for producing high quality dry, naturally sweet and semi-sweet wines. The annual average precipitation is within 400-800 mm band. Kakheti is divided into two macro-zones and about twenty-five micro-zones, such as: Tsinandali, Napareuli, Kindzmarauli, Kvareli, Gurjaani, Mukuzani, Akhasheni, Kardanakhi, Manavi and many others. The wines of Kakheti are notable for their original taste and bouquet. Grape varieties cultivated in Kakheti include Tsinandali, Saperavi, Kakhuri, Mtsvane and Khikhvi.

Kartli

Kartli occupies the large territory of Mtkvari valley including Gori and Mukhrani lowlands. The wines produced here are mostly European style. Sparkling wines are also produced in this region. Kartli Zone is characterized by continental climate and summers are hot and dry. The vineyards need to be irrigated as annual precipitation in this area is about 350-500 mm. Among the numerous grape varieties of this region Kisi, Budeshuri, Chinuri and Goruli Mtsvane are the most notable ones.

Racha-Lechkhumi

Racha-Lechkhumi is viticulture and winemaking area of Georgia. It is located in Western Georgia, in the basins of Rioni and Tskhenistskali rivers. Its territory represents a hollow edged by mountain ridges in all directions. Racha-Lechkhumi is based on humus-carbonate soil including fulvous (brown) forest. It is characterized by humid climate, moderately cold winter and prolonged warm summer. Annual precipitation amounts to 1050-1300mm. Heat summation accounts for 2700-3900C.
Viniculture is known since the end of 4-th and the beginning of 3-rd millennia B.C. Vineyard acreage holds 1,6 thousand ha (according to 2001-year data). Main sorts of vines of high-quality composition are “Alexandrouli”, “Ojaleshi” and “Tsulukidzis Tetri”.
Production of eminent high-quality wines, particularly of “Khvanchkara”, “Usakhelouri” and “Tvishi”, is carried out in Racha-Lechkhumi region.

So far all big Georgian spirit producers used expensive barrels brought from Europe. “Cupa” will produce 100 different-size-barrels monthly, which initially will be sold on a local market.
The idea of establishing this plant was born as a result of the TV show “Idea, Money and One Chance” during which the Director General of Teliani Valley Mr. Archil Gegenava expressed his readiness to invest in one of the related projects.
The presentation of oak barrel producing plant “Cupa” was held in the framework of Teliani Valley wine festival, that was widely highlighted by Georgian mass media.
